The latest issue of the New Scientist (8 Feb 2020) has an interesting article on spider cognition written by the science journalist and writer David Robson. While the article focus somewhat on the impressive cognitive abilities of the jumping spider Portia (although I don’t agree when the article compare this to consciousness), it also touches on orb web spiders and their webs as a possible example of extended cognition. I was also interviewed for the article and my own work on orb spider cognition relating to exploration behaviour during web-building and the possible use of ‘cognitive maps’ and/or stigmergy was featured (first discussed in my 2015 review paper).
